Hello! I'm Vale :D and this is my little corner to talk about my favorite otome game! Yes, I'm talking about "The Ssum", the latest game by Cheritz. It makes me sad that it's not very well known, so I decided to try different ways to help more people discover it. And what better way than making a blog about it? Welcome to the delusions of a fan deeply in love with a game and its characters!
Note: Spanish is my first language, so my English is not very good yet :'0 I use a translator, so please be patient with me :')
The Ssum is a mobile otome game that mixes romance, mystery, daily conversations, and moments full of intense emotions. The main focus of each route is the personal growth and development of each protagonist, who we accompany through their daily lives with chats and phone calls.
Even though it may seem like just a conversation-based game at first, The Ssum has a much larger story that connects all four currently available routes in a mysterious way. The original premise of the game was to uncover the secrets behind the app “The Ssum”, from its creation to the whereabouts of its creator, the mysterious Dr. Cus-Monsieur, who is currently missing. This main storyline is more present in the first routes of the game (Teo and Harry). However, after changes within the development team, the newer routes (June and Henri) began focusing much more on the emotional and personal development of each protagonist, featuring more intense and dramatic stories. Even so, these routes are still affected by the secrets surrounding the mysterious app “The Ssum”.
Despite the game mainly consisting of chats and phone calls, The Ssum manages to create a surprisingly large and lively world thanks to its secondary characters, who have their own personalities, problems, and character development. Through the protagonists, we also get to experience different places, adventures, and small everyday stories, receiving pictures, anecdotes, and new memories every day.
Another thing that makes the experience more relaxing is the absence of traditional bad endings. Players can enjoy the routes at their own pace without constantly worrying about choosing the “wrong” answer, making the experience feel much more natural and personal. (More information about the gameplay in the section “How does The Ssum gameplay work?”)
Teo, often described by many characters as a “Golden Retriever” XD, is a character with a warm and kind personality. He works very hard to achieve his dreams and is a hopeless workaholic. Even so, he is always very attentive toward his beloved and enjoys sharing his daily life with her through calls, chats, and pictures. He always has a new anecdote to tell, because even though he is a very positive person, his bad luck seems to follow him everywhere.
Although Teo may appear cheerful and confident, the truth is that he can sometimes feel inadequate and insecure, even comparing himself to Harry. Because of this, he tries to hide his “bad” sides (according to him) from MC, since he does not want to disappoint her. To Teo, MC is the most important person in his life, and he wants her to feel proud of him. This causes some problems throughout the route, although the couple manages to resolve their arguments through communication, strengthening both their relationship and mutual trust.
Teo’s character development throughout his route is fairly subtle compared to the others. By this, I do not mean that he has no development at all, but rather that the pace of his story feels calm and slice-of-life-like, presenting a narrative that can feel very human and realistic; at least, that is how the player may experience it (that was definitely the case for me XD). Setting aside some of the mysterious and unrealistic aspects of The Ssum, Teo is introduced as someone who works part-time jobs in order to save money and achieve his dream of becoming a film director. He has good days and bad days; days where he pushes himself to the limit and others where he simply wants to rest. Days where he wants to go out into the world in search of adventure, and others where he just wants to stay at home. Teo does not overcome his fears and worries overnight; even so, little by little, he shows more determination to face them and continue moving forward in order to achieve his goals.
